It takes a fearless set of musicians to summon the spirit of Deep Purple – and a unique fire and skill to twist those sacred songs into bold new shapes. Formed in 1968, the fabled British band are the faces on rock ‘n’ roll’s Mount Rushmore, their six-decade catalogue not to be taken on lightly. But Purple were also high-wire improvisers whose live shows, caught on 1972’s Made In Japan, tested the limits and set the music free.
Now, that same rebel attitude burns in Strange Kind Of Women: the all-female supergroup whose electrifying live shows salute Purple’s timeless material while tearing up the dogma. “Deep Purple’s songs are part of rock history and have always been part of me as well,” says founder/guitarist Eliana Cargnelutti. “The most important thing is to preserve their power and, above all, that incredible freedom when performing live. We don’t reproduce every single note mechanically, like we were still in the 1970s. We’ve found room to let our own voices emerge. And that’s what keeps this music alive.”
Released December 4th, 2026 on Ruf Records – and catching the sparks from two incendiary European shows in 2025/2026 – Made In Germany I is the latest milestone for a band whose eight-year journey has moved at lightning pace. In her own right, Eliana is one of Italy’s most respected blues-rock guitarists and singer-songwriters. But in 2018, she began the hunt for four world-class female musicians with the chemistry, creativity, passion and character to plant their own flags in rock’s most hallowed songbook.
“We have very different personalities, but when we step onstage, somehow we bring them together into one powerful, collective energy,” explains Eliana of the Made In Germany I lineup comprising vocal powerhouse Ronnie Grace, jazz-piano virtuoso Margherita Gruden, bassist-to-the-stars Paola Zadra and internet-breaking drummer/influencer Chiara Cotugno. “To play this kind of music, strong technical skills are essential, but they’re not enough on their own. You also need dynamics, the ability to listen to one another and the right musical instinct.”
Making their stage debut in January 2019 – with a band name that nodded to Purple’s classic ’71 single – Strange Kind Of Women earned a dream endorsement just two months out of the gate, when the iconic British band’s founding drummer Ian Paice guested on the kit. “They really do a great job, have a great sound and give everything,” enthused Purple’s sole constant member since ’68. “I really enjoyed playing with them.”
