Humans did not invent the rhythm of the seasons; they recognized it. And that moment changed everything. To recognize a pattern is to recognize time; to recognize time is to recognize transience.
And in recognizing transience, one asks for the first time: Who am I within this cycle? From this question emerged agriculture, calendars, rituals, community, civilization—and music. For rhythm is not born of noise; it is born of recurrence.
Alan Watts described life as a musical phenomenon—an invitation to dance while the music plays. Not racing toward a destination or striving to "arrive," but simply flowing—feeling the beat and surrendering to it. This is *wu wei*; this is the Tao; this is also jazz. An improvising musician does precisely this: stepping into the unknown, leaving the familiar behind, discovering their own pulse amidst the uncertainty, and eventually returning—transformed, yet still recognizable. Joseph Campbell termed this same principle the "hero’s journey": departure, transformation, and homecoming—not as the same person, but as someone returning with something the community needs. The twelve compositions on *Cycles of Life* traverse the year from spring to winter; yet, far more than merely recounting the passage of the seasons, they map the very journey inherent to every season—and, indeed, to every honest musical solo.
The musicians behind this project have lived through their own cycles—finding themselves, losing themselves, and reinventing themselves. They have experienced magical nights and difficult ones; they have grappled with doubt, yet remained steadfast. They have let go of what no longer fit and held fast to what truly matters. David, Kolja, and Bobby—three biographies, three hero’s journeys, three individual paths through light and shadow—interweave to create a sound greater than the sum of its parts. *Cycles of Life* is no mere debut album. It is a mid-journey album, from a band that knows what lies behind it and has made a conscious choice about where it is headed.
And then, at the deepest point of the journey, something strange happens. When you have been playing for long enough—when the need to impress has faded, and the ego has grown weary of itself—the musician steps back. The fingers keep playing, yet you no longer know exactly who is doing the playing. The music flows through you, rather than from you. You are no longer the source; you are the medium. You dance as long as the music plays. You no longer ask where it is leading. You no longer observe the cycle—you are a part of it. The wheel turns, and you turn along with it. And somewhere within this motion—within this humming, swinging, dreamlike flow of notes—you realize what our ancestors realized when they first grasped that the seasons always return: you have been here all along.
Die Drahtzieher play *jazz manouche*, infused with influences from flamenco, Latin, folk, and the French *valse musette*. Deep melancholy meets fiery temperament.
The distinctive sound of Die Drahtzieher skillfully weaves together the experiences of three well-traveled musicians—artists who not only tour throughout Europe but also perform annually at the Festival Django Reinhardt in Samois-sur-Seine. In recent years, the ensemble’s travels have taken them as far as Japan and Ecuador. Their numerous collaborations with established luminaries of the genre do full justice to their evocative, conspiratorial-sounding name. In their inventive arrangements, every instrument stands on equal footing, resulting in a wonderfully unique band spirit.
