These songs have been accumulating in my life since the 1960s, long before I ever began writing my own. Many remained with me as warm-up pieces, familiar companions I would return to before a performance, or simply as a welcome respite from singing my own words. Every so often, another would find its way into the collection. I'd be idly playing the guitar, stumble across a progression that reminded me of a song—"You Belong to Me," for instance—and realize I needed to go back and truly learn it. Some of these selections are deeply sentimental favorites, while others fascinated me as musical journeys across the guitar's fingerboard.
