WITH EACH ALBUM WE’VE CHALLENGED OURSELVES TO COVER NEW GROUND, TO EXPERIMENT WITH VARIOUS STYLES WE FIND INSPIRING AND TO MAKE THE BEST RECORDINGS POSSIBLE. WE DO THIS ALL WHILE STAYING TRUE TO THE ONLY SOUND WE KNOW HOW TO MAKE. AFTER DECADES OF WRITING SONGS, RECORDING ALBUMS AND PLAYING THOUSANDS OF SHOWS WE HAVE CREATED A MUSICAL LANGUAGE THAT IS UNIQUE TO THE FOUR OF US. AS A BAND WE ARE WELL AWARE THAT BY THIS POINT THE MUSIC WE CREATE IS LARGER THAN THE FOUR OF US COULD MAKE INDIVIDUALLY. I BELIEVE OUR FANS APPRECIATE US FOR THE HONESTY AND INTENTION OF OUR MUSIC. WASTED LANDS IS MUSIC FOR THE FOUR OF US AS MUCH AS IT IS FOR THE FANS WE HAVE MADE OVER THE 36 YEARS WE HAVE BEEN A BAND. “THE DRIFTER RETURNS” - THE DRIFTER RETURNS IS ONE OF THE LAST SONGS THAT CAME TOGETHER FOR WASTED LANDS. TIM AND I MET UP AT THE DOOM SALOON TO RECORD SOME IDEAS SHORTLY AFTER OUR EUROPEAN TOUR IN DECEMBER OF 2025. WE WERE SET TO BEGIN RECORDING THE ALBUM JUST AFTER THE NEW YEAR SO TIME WAS LIMITED. AS ALWAYS SOME OF OUR BEST SONGS ARE THE ONES THAT ARE WRITTEN LAST. I HEARD WHAT WE CALL “HITS” WITHIN THE RIFF TIM HAD RECORDED ON OUR ORIGINAL DEMO. WE PUT THOSE “HITS” AT THE TOP OF THE SONG AS AN INTRO. NEIL’S LYRICS ABOUT THE GEORGIA GUIDESTONES INSIDE THOSE HITS BLEW US AWAY. IT MAKES FOR THE PERFECT ALBUM OPENER. “WASTED LANDS” - FOR THE WRITING OF THIS ALBUM OFTEN TIMES I WOULD RECORD MYSELF PLAYING DRUM BEATS TO A CLICK TRACK. AFTERWARDS, I FIND A SECTION THAT I LIKE AND LOOP IT. TIM AND I WOULD MEET UP AT THE DOOM SALOON OR IN THE BACK OF THE BUS ON DAYS OFF TO RECORD HIS RIFFS ON THESE LOOPED BEATS. A LITTLE LATER THE BAND GETS TOGETHER TO “BEAT UP” THOSE IDEAS . THAT MEANS WE LEARN THE PARTS, PLAY THRU THEM AND TWEAK AND ARRANGE UNTIL WE HAVE SOMETHING WE FEEL SOUNDS LIKE A SONG. WASTED LANDS WAS ONE OF THOSE IDEAS. NEIL OFTEN SAYS, "THE BEST SONGS COME TOGETHER QUICKLY”

THE VERSION YOU HEAR ON THE RECORD IS VERY SIMILAR TO THE DEMO THE BAND RECORDED MADE IN APRIL OF 2025. “BEWARE THE FEVER” - THE MUSIC FOR BEWARE THE FEVER CAME TO LIFE IN WHAT I BELIEVE TO BE RECORD TIME FOR OUR BAND. IT STARTED WITH ONE OF THOSE PRE- RECORDED DRUM LOOPS. THIS TIME NEIL RECORDED SOME BANJO PARTS FIRST. HE FOLLOWED UP WITH SOME ELECTRIC GUITAR AND THEN BASS TO CREATE THE MASSIVE CHORUS. THE WHOLE PROCESS TOOK LESS THAN 20 MINUTES. I LOVED THE MUSIC RIGHT AWAY. I REMEMBER LISTENING TO THE INSTRUMENTAL DEMO OVER AND OVER AGAIN WONDERING WHAT NEIL MIGHT SING ON IT. IT WAS MONTHS LATER WHILE IN PRE-PRODUCTION WITH MACHINE THAT WE FINALLY HEARD THOSE AMAZING LYRICS.
“BEWARE THE FEVER RUNNING THRU TOWN”
THIS SONG IS EASILY ONE OF MY FAVORITES ON THE RECORD. THE BANJO YOU HEAR ON THE ALBUM IS FROM THAT FIRST DEMO NEIL PLAYED IN THE DOOM SALOON ONE AFTERNOON IN JANUARY OF 2026.
