Briar is the new expression on the ever-curious path of Daniel Romano.
Briar is an act of sacred imagination and symbol of duality. It is cosmic and immediate. It is the Mother Tree that brings forth the soul and protects it in a cover of thorns. The soul’s journey is to collapse this duality through polarity inversion into a higher harmonic state. The Briar is the guardian of sacred knowledge, that is not amassed as “information” but is eternal and waiting to be remembered. In song.
Beautifully sung and played entirely on acoustic instruments, Briar furthers the psychedelic folk journeys that have run parallel to Daniel Romano’s street level rock and roll work with the powerful and beloved Outfit. Beyond the classic Finally Free, beyond Visions of the Higher Dream, beyond Dandelion - something new and ancient. Devoted and yearning, deeply human and embodied, Briar was recorded on an eight track cassette machine with a Royer 121 and a Sennheiser 409. It was mixed down to a two track Marantz cassette machine by Daniel Romano. It was mastered by Kristian Montano.
Briar is offered as testament to the deeply sacred qualities of music. It was wholly conjured through “instant intuition” and silent listening. No thoughts, no questions, just flowing with the breath of the cosmic—lost between the air and sky—but I’m gonna fly. Serious, like singing, curious of our next beginning. It is imperfect and asymmetrical (as the universe).
The Briar reminds us that polarities are not opposites, they are a unified field, and with coherence and balance we can radically transform. We can move from separation to union; from ego to soul; from dogma to Gnosis; and embrace our inherent interconnectedness.
