Billie Holiday’s life was as much sandpaper as it was satin. The beauty of her singing was always a surface gloss over real pain. But like so many apparently tortured or unlucky artists, she had a deep desire to find something affirmative even in the darkest materials. Just as John Coltrane sometimes turned from trying to find the Godhead in order to play pretty, so Holiday, after making so many records for Norman Granz’s Verve, was desperate to make something sweetly lyrical with bandleader Ray Ellis. Instead of using the band to push her along, she now wanted her accompanists to cushion and support her singing. One might think this was a lesser act of creation, but listen just once to Lady in Satin and it’s hard not to recognize the difference between the Billie Holiday that circumstance forced her to be and the Billie Holiday she recognized in herself.

Lady in Satin, recorded and released in 1958, marked Billie Holiday's last big hit and her second to last album ever. It represents something close to her swan song. Most jazz fans now consider Lady in Satin to be Holiday's last great effort. Whatever its merits and flaws, there is no doubt that it is one of Billie Holiday's most poignant recordings ever, and a true jazz classic.
